The Reverend John McLeod from Peoples Church in Toronto arrived in Newmarket to conduct evangelistic street meetings at the corner of Main and Botsford Street in 1931. He gathered a few Christians about him and started meetings in the Temperance Hall on Millard Avenue. The congregation was named The Gospel Tabernacle and locally became know as "The Tab", (as told by Winnie Cumber, past member of Grace Church)
In the spring of 1933, Mr. James Taylor came to assist in the work. The church was renamed The Gospel Tabernacle. In 1940 under the leadership of the Rev. Len Copeland, the congregation affiliated with the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada. Rev. A.R. Yielding was called to be pastor in 1948. The congregation now known as "Grace Church" purchased property on Botsford and new building dedicated on March 1, 1953.
The Rev. Herbert Heppner became pastor in the fall of 1964, and led the church in an aggressive missionary program that carries on to this day. The present church location was purchased in 1972 and the building dedicated on November 23, 1975 under the leadership of Rev. Grover Crosby whose ministry began in October 1973. The work experienced steady growth. The Grace Church Daycare was incorporated in 1974. The Newmarket and District Christian Academy opened its door to sixty-nine students in the fall of 1979.
1997 was a painful and difficult year for Grace Church. Differing visions and expectations collided bringing about a split in the congregation. God humbled the church through this time, resulting in a greater dependency and trust in the Lord. Rev. Dr. Grant Gordon was asked to serve as our Intentional Interim Pastor. Under Grant's leadership the Lord began reviving and uniting His people at Grace. We are indebted to Grant's love and care.
Following Grant came Rev. Dr. Kel Trudgian from Memphis Tennessee and he served Grace for just over four years, from January 1st, 2000 till August 2004.
After Kel, Dr. Paul Kerr served for 6 months as an interim until Russ Worrad came March 28, 2005, and he is our current Senior Pastor.
